Compassionate Science - Integrating Empathy and Compassion in Research

This report explores how empathy and compassion shape research practices across disciplines. Drawing on a review of existing literature and illustrative examples from early career researchers, it shows that empathy and compassion are not abstract ideals but practical tools influencing research design, relationships, data interpretation, and knowledge translation. Across fields, integrating these dimensions strengthens trust, deepens understanding, improves collaboration, and enhances ethical reflexivity. The case examples demonstrate that compassionate research can redistribute power, amplify marginalized voices, improve data quality, and foster socially responsive knowledge production. At the same time, challenges remain. Empathy and compassion are not always clearly defined or operationalized, disciplinary norms vary, and institutional structures rarely reward relational or participatory work. Greater conceptual clarity, training, and structural support are needed. Overall, compassionate science does not weaken rigor but broadens it by integrating relational awareness and ethical responsibility into research practice.
