Switzerland‘s health system is well known for its high quality. At the same time, Swit- zerland is also well known for its high healthcare costs. Against this background, the question arises whether the human and financial resources deployed are sustainable over the long term. For this reason, the “Sustainable healthcare“ pro- ject was launched by the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences.

Compassionate Science - Integrating Empathy and Compassion in Research

Drawing on a review of existing literature and illustrative examples from early-career researchers, it shows that empathy and compassion are not abstract ideals but practical dimensions of research that can influence study design, relationships, data interpretation, and knowledge translation. Across fields, integrating these dimensions can strengthen trust, deepen understanding, improve collaboration, and enhance ethical reflexivity.
